WOLLONGONG'S chances of conquering Perth tonight have nosedived after captain and three-point marksman Mat Campbell was ruled out with an Achilles injury yesterday.
After suffering the injury in the Hawks' recent home win over West Sydney, Campbell battled through pain in last week's loss to Gold Coast but was unable to train this week. The 31-year-old will also miss Sunday's road clash with West Sydney and could be sidelined for up to a month."I can't even begin to describe my frustration. It's hard to swallow when you just want to be out on the court doing everything you can to help the team win," Campbell said."I knew it wasn't right so I prepared myself for bad news, but it still doesn't make it any easier when you get told you have to miss one game, let alone several games. It's even more disappointing considering I'd come back fairly well from knee surgery in the off-season. I guess this is another setback I'll just have to deal with."Campbell has enjoyed a run of highs lately. He is in sparkling form on the court, making almost 60 per cent of his three-point shots, and last week became a first-time father. His dream house by the beach is in its final stages, although his injury will prevent him from taking on any heavy chores for a while. The Hawks (1-5) are struggling, but new import Angelo Reyes arrives today and Campbell called on the region to keep the faith."There's no doubt against West Sydney the crowd helped us get off to that good start. This is our first home game since then and hopefully they'll come in droves," he said."The vibe was good that night and that's the support we need every night on our home court."There's games we probably could've won, but you can't dwell on any of that stuff. We're done with excuses. "We've been together long enough now to find a way to win. If we can get two wins we're right back in the mix, so it's definitely a huge weekend for us."
