WOLLONGONG captain-in-waiting Mat Campbell has urged Hawks management to remain patient in their search for a high quality import.
One of only three players returning from last season, Campbell is making a steady recovery from March knee surgery and is almost certain to be named Wollongong captain for the 2007-08 NBL season. The Hawks are rebuilding almost from scratch. They recruited five new players over the past month and are still in the market for a pair of forwards - an Australian and an American.Although disappointed the club was unable to sign former Perth and South Dragons import Rosell Ellis, Campbell believes the Hawks would be wise to play a waiting game."We're not in a rush to get the import done. It's important to stay patient because more guys might become available as you get closer to the season," the 30-year-old said."Townsville found Larry Abney that way and other teams have waited a bit longer and ended up with a really good import, so it's not like we have to hurry up and sign someone."Campbell endorsed the Hawks' off-season signings and is keen to make them feel at home in the Gong."I'm excited about the guys coming in," he said."There's youth there, and (American guard) Kavossy (Franklin) is a tough guard and someone I've admired for a while. I'm looking forward to playing alongside him."I caught up with (Brisbane star) CJ (Bruton) on the Gold Coast recently and he speaks highly of (Cameron) Tragardh."I'll talk to them about the rules we abide by and the hard-nosed style we play. We'll have to be big on the effort areas next season."There's some teams that have got some serious talent, so we have to be the team that does everything right."
